The Gallaudet uprising focused much attention on Deaf people. Now, a year later, some organizations for the Deaf have started to identify as disabled in order to have more political ”clout." I am questioning that strategy. Although, as individuals, we may support the struggles of disabled people,we need to ask ourselves who benefits when we attempt to work in coalition with disability groups. Do we have the same goals? More and more Deaf people have organized to obtain formal credit for ASL as a foreign language. How can we fight for official recognition of ASL and allow ourselves to be labelled “communication disordered" at the same time?
