Deaf Jurors - Yes or No? was the title of a forum I attended recently in Baltimore, Maryland. The forum was held in an actual courtroom, not in a classroom or auditorium. What struck me most, when I first arrived, was the incredible size of the courtroom and the awesome, almost gothic feel. But the lighting was excellent, there was television equipment set up, and an FM loop system for hard of hearing people. This was definitely the twentieth century. Dual interpreting services were provided; there were four interpreters, two for ASL and two for PSE. There was also an interpreter for one of the panelists and an oral interpreter. Handouts about proposed legislation and the opinion of the Attorney General as to D/deaf persons‘ rights as defendent, witness, juror, or victim were provided.
